ScanSolve for Chrome (“the Extension”) helps students understand their coursework. This policy explains exactly what the Extension accesses, why, and how we handle it. Plain language first; the formal Chrome Web Store Limited Use statement is at the end. For our general service privacy policy, see getscansolve.com/privacy.

What the Extension accesses — and only when you ask

  • Page content of your active tab, only when you click “Solve this page.” The Extension does not read pages in the background, does not run on page load, and does not read any tab other than the one you explicitly act on. It reads the assignment text and/or takes a single screenshot of the visible tab at the moment you click Solve.
  • Your account info, only if you sign in (email + a Firebase authentication token), to save your work and manage your subscription.
  • Basic technical identifiers and anonymous usage analytics — a random install ID and IP address to enforce free-tier limits and prevent abuse, plus anonymous, aggregated counts of in-extension actions (for example, how many times “Solve” was used) to understand and improve the product. These analytics never include your page content and are not tied to your real-world identity.
  • Your own Canvas class list & due dates, only if you tap “Connect Canvas.” We read from your already-logged-in Canvas session, see only your own data, never sign in as you, and never submit anything for you.

The Extension uses the minimum Chrome permissions required: activeTab, scripting, sidePanel, storage, alarms, and notifications. It requests no broad “read all your data on all websites” permission at install; the Canvas host permission is requested only if and when you tap Connect Canvas.

How the data is used

  • The page content you submit is sent to the ScanSolve backend (api.getscansolve.com) and to our AI processing providers (Google Gemini and/or OpenAI) solely to generate the worked solution, study notes, and (for Pro users) the handwritten solution card you requested.
  • Account and usage data is used only to operate your account, enforce limits, and provide the service.

What we do NOT do

  • We do not sell or rent your data.
  • We do not use your data for advertising or to build advertising profiles.
  • We do not use your data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
  • We do not allow humans to read your submitted page content except where required for security, to comply with law, or with your explicit consent.
  • We do not transfer your data to third parties except the AI processors above (acting on our instructions) and our infrastructure providers, or as required by law.

Academic integrity & how filling works

When you tap “Fill,” ScanSolve writes the worked answer into the field on the page you’re viewing so you can review it. You always review and submit yourself — ScanSolve never auto-submits, and it does not operate during proctored or locked online exams (a fail-safe kill-switch blocks it there). You are responsible for using ScanSolve in line with your school’s academic-integrity policy.

Data retention & security

  • Submitted content is processed to produce your result and retained only as needed to provide history and features; you can request deletion at privacy@getscansolve.com.
  • All requests are authenticated with a Bearer token; data is transmitted over HTTPS. Authentication tokens are stored only in the extension’s sandboxed local storage, never in web-page-accessible storage.

Children & students' data

The Extension is intended for users who can lawfully consent. Where it is used by students, we process only the coursework content the user actively submits, for the sole purpose of providing the requested help. We do not knowingly collect more than is necessary.

Chrome Web Store — Limited Use disclosure

ScanSolve for Chrome’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs and from web page content accessed through the Extension will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Specifically:

  • We collect and use web page content only to provide and improve the user-facing feature the user invoked (generating solutions, notes, and cards for the assignment they chose to submit).
  • We do not transfer this data to third parties except (a) AI processors and infrastructure providers necessary to provide the feature, (b) for security or legal compliance, or (c) with the user’s explicit consent.
  • We do not use this data for serving advertisements, and we do not allow humans to read it except as described above.
  • The data is accessed only on an explicit user gesture (clicking Solve) on the active tab — never in the background.
