What is fibrosis of interstitial tissue

Fibrosis of interstitial tissue refers to the excessive and abnormal formation of fibrous connective tissue (scar tissue) in the spaces between cells in an organ or tissue. This process, also known as fibrosis, can occur in response to chronic injury, inflammation, or irritation.

When tissue is damaged, the body's repair mechanism involves producing collagen to replace the damaged cells. In fibrosis, this repair process becomes dysregulated, leading to an overproduction and deposition of collagen. This excess collagen can stiffen the tissue, impair its function, and eventually lead to organ damage or failure.
