- Isolation: The separation of sick people with a contagious disease from people who are not sick.

- Endemic: A disease or condition regularly found among particular people or in a certain area.
- Pandemic: An epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, affecting a large number of people.
- Sporadic: Occurring at irregular intervals or only in a few places; scattered or isolated. In epidemiology, it refers to a disease that occurs infrequently and irregularly.
- Prodromal: The period between the appearance of initial symptoms and the full development of a rash or other typical symptoms.
- Incubation period: The period between exposure to an infection and the appearance of the first symptoms.
- Quarantine: The restriction of movement and separation of healthy people who may have been exposed to a contagious disease to see if they become ill.
- Latency: A period during which a pathogen is present in the body but is not causing symptoms or actively replicating.
- Carrier: An individual who harbors an infectious agent without showing symptoms and can transmit the infection to others.
- Endogenous infection: An infection caused by microorganisms that are normally present in the body but become pathogenic under certain conditions.
- Exogenous infection: An infection caused by microorganisms that originate from outside the body.
- Infection: The invasion and multiplication of microorganisms in body tissues, which may or may not cause disease.
- Nosocomial infection: An infection acquired in a hospital or other healthcare setting; also known as a healthcare-associated infection (HAI).
