Explain lipid metabolism

Lipid metabolism refers to the synthesis (anabolism) and degradation (catabolism) of lipids in cells. This complex process involves breaking down dietary fats into smaller molecules for absorption and energy, or building up lipids for storage and cellular structures. Key processes include lipolysis (breakdown of triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol), beta-oxidation (breakdown of fatty acids to produce acetyl-CoA for energy), and ketogenesis (production of ketone bodies from acetyl-CoA when glucose is scarce). Lipids are also synthesized through lipogenesis, primarily in the liver and adipose tissue.
