Osmosis is the net movement of solvent molecules (usually water) through a selectively permeable membrane from a region of higher solvent concentration to a region of lower solvent concentration. This process aims to equalize the solute concentrations on both sides of the membrane. For example, when a plant root cell is in soil with a higher water concentration than inside the cell, water will move into the cell via osmosis.
