ISC 215: WORKSHOP PRACTICES, SKILL ACQUISITION

a) Define Welding.
Welding is a fabrication process that joins materials, typically metals or thermoplastics, by causing coalescence. This is often achieved by melting the workpieces together and adding a filler material to form a molten pool that cools to become a strong joint. Pressure may also be used, either alone or in combination with heat, to create the bond.

b) State five (5) Safety precautions for Soldering.

1. Wear appropriate eye protection: Always use safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes from splashes of molten solder, flux, or flying debris.
2. Ensure good ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area or use a fume extractor to avoid inhaling solder fumes, which can be irritating or harmful.
3. Use a heat-resistant surface and stand: Place the hot soldering iron on a dedicated heat-resistant stand and work on a heat-resistant mat to prevent burns and damage to your workbench.
4. Avoid touching hot components: Never touch the tip of the soldering iron, molten solder, or recently soldered components directly with your hands, as they are extremely hot. Use tweezers or clamps for handling.
5. Wash hands after soldering: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after soldering to remove any lead residue (if using leaded solder) or flux chemicals.
