Newspapers are primarily profit driven (Q.51). This is because the more valuable the advertising space, the higher the advertising revenue (Q.52). It will do this by writing for the widest appeal (Q.53) possible, which involves appealing to a number of different audiences (Q.54) or groups that can be categorised according to age, gender and interests. Does this mean that all newspapers will look exactly the same, as they all want to appeal (Q.55) to everyone? To an extent, while tabloid and broadsheet newspapers share many similarities, they also acknowledge the fact that people gravitate to one style of newspaper because they expect certain sections (Q.56). For example, if tabloid newspapers suddenly refused to print any stories of a sensationalist or entertaining nature, they would alienate (Q.57) their readers who are looking for something other than just "serious" journalism. The aim therefore, is to appeal to, and maintain, a readership (Q.58), while also hoping to "steal" a few readers from elsewhere by offering a range of features (Q.59) or categories within the paper that appeal to diverse demographics (Q.60).
