Every morning, I wake up before dawn to fetch water, my back aching before I even get to school. I try, I really do, but my mind is always on what needs to be done at home. I just know he's going to lecture me about not trying hard enough, about my "poor performance." He doesn't understand what it's like. He lives in a different world. I dread facing his disappointment, his pity. What good is pity when my stomach is empty and my hands are chapped from carrying buckets? I just want to disappear.
