Identify passive-voice verbs. Rewrite active sentences in the passive voice and identify sentences that cannot be rewritten in the passive voice.

1. Find the passive-voice verbs in these sentences.

• The message will be displayed on the screen.
• If a message is unread, a small closed envelope will be shown.
• If a message is read, an open envelope will be seen on the screen.
• If a message is received with a file, a small paper-clip picture will be.

2. Rewrite three in the passive voice. Find three that cannot be in the passive voice.

Sentences that can be rewritten in the passive voice:

• 2.2 Active: My teacher will use the marks for my year mark. Passive: The marks will be used by my teacher for my year mark.
• 2.5 Active: My teacher will mark the tests this weekend. Passive: The tests will be marked by my teacher this weekend.
• 2.6 Active: She will give us the results next week. Passive: The results will be given to us by her next week.

Sentences that cannot be rewritten in the passive voice:

• 2.1 I have a literature test tomorrow. This sentence uses the verb "have" to indicate possession or a scheduled event, which typically does not form a natural passive construction.
• 2.3 I need to study hard tonight. The verb "need" here expresses a requirement of the subject and does not have a direct object that can become the subject of a passive sentence in a natural way.
• 2.4 My friend and I can study together. The verb "study" in this context is used intransitively (it does not take a direct object), so it cannot be made passive.
