Regarding the map of Papua New Guinea, it is located in Oceania, north of Australia, and comprises the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, along with numerous offshore islands and archipelagos. Key geographical features include:
- Mainland: The large island of New Guinea, characterized by a central spine of high mountains (the Highlands region) and extensive lowland rainforests, rivers, and coastal areas.
- Islands: Significant island groups include New Britain, New Ireland, Bougainville, and Manus, among others.
- Diversity: The diverse terrain, from high mountains to coastal plains and islands, contributes to the country's rich cultural and linguistic diversity, and also presents challenges for governance and infrastructure development.
As we've discussed, Members of Parliament (MPs) are elected to represent specific electorates and primarily focus on making laws in the National Parliament and advocating for their constituents. Provincial Governors are also elected and serve as MPs for their entire province, leading the provincial government and overseeing administration and service delivery at the provincial level.
Papua New Guinea is divided into 22 provinces, including the National Capital District and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. Each province is further subdivided into districts, which are the primary units for local administration and service delivery. New districts have been added over time to improve governance and bring services closer to the people, particularly in remote areas.
