Functions of plants and animals

Plants:

• Photosynthesis: Plants convert light energy into chemical energy (sugars) using carbon dioxide and water, releasing oxygen. This forms the base of most food chains.
• Support and Structure: They provide physical structure for habitats and food sources for other organisms.
• Water and Nutrient Cycling: Their roots help stabilize soil and absorb nutrients, while transpiration releases water vapor into the atmosphere.

Animals:

• Consumers: Animals obtain energy by eating other organisms (plants or other animals).
• Movement and Dispersal: They can move, which helps in pollination, seed dispersal, and nutrient distribution.
• Decomposition: Some animals, like decomposers, break down dead organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil.
• Ecosystem Engineers: Some animals significantly modify their environment, creating habitats for others.
