Two main motives for European powers at the Berlin Conference were economic gain and political prestige. Economically, they sought access to Africa's abundant raw materials like rubber, diamonds, and palm oil for their industrial factories, and new markets to sell their manufactured goods. Politically, expanding their empires in Africa boosted their national power and international standing, while also securing strategic territories and trade routes.
