Dame Carol Kidu's remarkable journey began with her marriage to Buri on August 11, 1969, at the University of Queensland Chapel. Buri graduated with a Bachelor of Law degree by the end of 1970, and their first daughter, Dobbie Anne, was born on March 15, 1971. In 1971, Buri and Carol moved to Papua New Guinea, where Buri worked with the Department of Law and Carol taught at Port Moresby High School. The family moved to Rabaul in 1974, where Buri served as Crown Solicitor for the New Guinea Islands Region, and Carol taught at Boisen High School. Their second daughter, Wendy Tutuhi, was also born in 1974. The Buri family returned to Port Moresby in late 1974. Buri's legal career advanced rapidly; he was appointed State Solicitor in October 1977 and Secretary for Justice in January 1978. On August 14, 1980, Buri was sworn in as the first Papua New Guinean Chief Justice, becoming the youngest Chief Justice in the world at 35. Tragically, Buri died of a heart attack on January 30, 1994, leaving behind Carol with two daughters and two sons, including an adopted son and daughter.
