The Western Region of Nigeria was a historical administrative division in Nigeria, primarily inhabited by the Yoruba people.

• Pre-colonial Era: The region was home to powerful Yoruba kingdoms like the Oyo Empire, Benin Kingdom, and various city-states, known for their sophisticated political structures, art, and trade networks.
• Colonial Era: British influence began in the 19th century, leading to the establishment of the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria. Lagos was annexed in 1861. The region was later incorporated into the larger British colonial administration.
• Post-Independence: The Western Region was one of the three original regions of Nigeria at independence in 1960. It was a center of political activity, led by figures like Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his Action Group party. The region was known for its advancements in education and infrastructure.
• Dissolution: Political crises in the 1960s led to the creation of the Mid-Western Region in 1963. The Western Region was eventually dissolved in 1967 with the creation of 12 states, splitting into states like Western State, Lagos State, and later further subdivisions.

The history of the Western Region is marked by its rich cultural heritage, significant political contributions to Nigeria, and its role in the nation's development.
