What is epistemic injustice and linguistic subjugation

Epistemic injustice occurs when someone is wronged specifically in their capacity as a knower. This can happen in two main ways:

1. Testimonial injustice: This is when a speaker's testimony is given less credibility due to prejudice on the part of the hearer. For example, if a woman's account of harassment is dismissed because the listener holds sexist beliefs.
2. Hermeneutical injustice: This occurs when a person or group lacks the shared concepts or interpretive resources to understand or articulate their own social experiences. This often happens to marginalized groups whose experiences haven't been adequately understood or named within the dominant culture.

Linguistic subjugation is a form of epistemic injustice where a dominant group imposes its language or linguistic norms on a subordinate group, thereby marginalizing or devaluing the subordinate group's own language, dialect, or ways of speaking. This can lead to the subjugation of their knowledge, culture, and identity, as their ability to express themselves and be understood is constrained by the dominant linguistic framework.
