Reflection on discrimination and violations of basic rights during online election campaigns. My position is that online election campaigns significantly threaten non-discrimination and basic human rights within communities. The digital environment, while offering broad reach, also amplifies the potential for harm and exploitation of societal vulnerabilities. Online campaigns frequently employ micro-targeting to deliver divisive messages, exploiting existing biases based on race, religion, gender, or socio-economic status. This leads to hate speech against minorities and misinformation designed to disenfranchise specific voters, directly undermining the principle of equality and fair representation. Furthermore, basic human rights are often violated. Online harassment and coordinated attacks suppress dissenting voices, while widespread disinformation impedes citizens' right to accurate information. Extensive data collection without consent violates privacy, and online voter suppression tactics obstruct the right to participate in public affairs. These issues erode trust in democratic institutions, deepen societal divisions, and marginalize vulnerable groups. Addressing them requires robust ethical guidelines, effective content moderation, and strong legal frameworks to protect human rights in the digital sphere.
