Let's start with the most fundamental building blocks: A point is a specific location in space with no size or dimension, usually represented by a dot. A line is a straight path that extends infinitely in two opposite directions, having length but no width; a line segment is a part of a line with two endpoints, while a ray has one endpoint and extends infinitely in one direction. A plane is a flat, two-dimensional surface that extends infinitely in all directions, like a perfectly flat sheet of paper.

When two rays share a common endpoint, called the vertex, they form an angle. Angles are measured in degrees. An acute angle measures less than 90°, a right angle measures exactly 90° (like the corner of a square), and an obtuse angle is greater than 90° but less than 180°. A straight angle forms a straight line and measures 180°.

Moving to two-dimensional shapes, polygons are closed figures made of straight line segments. A triangle is a polygon with three sides, and the sum of its interior angles is always 180°. A quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides, with common examples including squares, rectangles, and parallelograms. A circle is a set of all points in a plane that are equally distant from a central point; this distance is called the radius, and the distance across the circle through the center is the diameter.

Finally, two important measurements for 2D shapes are perimeter, which is the total distance around the outside of the shape, and area, which is the amount of surface a shape covers.
