PROBLEM STATEMENT The persistent challenge of low student engagement in secondary school mathematics classrooms has been identified as a significant barrier to effective learning and academic achievement (Johnson, 2021). This problem originates from a combination of factors, including traditional pedagogical approaches that prioritize rote learning over active participation, a perceived lack of relevance of mathematical concepts to real-world applications, and insufficient differentiation in teaching methods to cater to diverse learning styles (Smith & Chen, 2020). Evidence of this problem is consistently observed through declining student participation rates in class discussions, a noticeable increase in off-task behavior during independent work, and consistently lower performance on problem-solving tasks compared to procedural exercises. Furthermore, recent school-wide surveys indicate that over 60% of secondary mathematics students report feeling "bored" or "uninterested" in their mathematics lessons at least three times a week (School District Report, 2023).
