The key role of parathyroid hormone (PTH) is to regulate calcium and phosphate homeostasis. Briefly, PTH acts to increase blood calcium levels and decrease blood phosphate levels. It achieves this by stimulating the release of calcium from bones, reducing calcium excretion by the kidneys, and promoting calcium absorption in the intestines via activated vitamin D.
