A carnet is an international customs document that simplifies customs procedures for the temporary admission of goods or vehicles, acting as a guarantee for duties and taxes. There are three main types:

1. ATA Carnet: This carnet is used for the temporary admission of goods into a country without paying duties and taxes. It covers a wide range of goods, such as commercial samples, professional equipment, and goods for exhibitions or trade fairs. It's valid for up to one year and simplifies re-importation into the originating country.

2. TIR Carnet: The TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) carnet is used for the international transit of goods by road. It allows goods to be transported across multiple countries under customs seal, with duties and taxes suspended until the final destination. This streamlines border crossings by reducing the need for repeated customs checks at each frontier.

3. CPD Carnet (Carnet de Passages en Douanes): This carnet is specifically for the temporary admission of private road vehicles (cars, motorcycles, motorhomes) into countries where a vehicle guarantee is required. It acts as a customs declaration and a guarantee for the temporary import of the vehicle, ensuring that it will be re-exported.
