The KwaZulu-Natal floods in April were a very serious natural disaster in South Africa. More than 300mm of rain fell in just one day, causing bad floods and landslides. Over 400 people died, and 40,000 lost their homes. Roads, bridges, and the water system were all destroyed. The disaster happened because of a cut-off low pressure system and poor drainage, which climate change is making worse. We cannot stop natural disasters, but these floods show we need better buildings and plans to protect people in the future.
