5.1 State the concept depicted in the sketch. 1.5.2 Identify the province in the bar graph with the highest urban population.

here are the solutions for the questions:

Section 1.5: Population growth and its effects

• 1.5.1 The concept depicted in the sketch is rural-urban migration.
• 1.5.2 The province with the highest urban population in the bar graph is Gauteng.
• 1.5.3 Two reasons for the high urban population in Gauteng are:
  • Abundance of job opportunities in various industries, attracting people seeking employment.
  • Better access to services and infrastructure, such as quality education, healthcare, and recreational facilities.
• 1.5.4 Favourable factors attracting people to cities are called pull factors.
• 1.5.5 Rural depopulation is driven by push factors like limited job prospects, inadequate access to basic services such as healthcare and education, and poor infrastructure. To reduce this, strategies should focus on rural development. This includes investing in infrastructure like roads, electricity, and internet connectivity, creating employment opportunities through agricultural development, agro-processing, and rural tourism, and improving the quality and accessibility of social services. Such initiatives can enhance the quality of life in rural areas, making them more attractive for residents and potentially reversing the trend of people moving to cities.
