Explain the Demographic Transition Model and its stages.

The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) describes the historical shift from high birth rates and high death rates in societies with minimal technology, education, and economic development, to low birth rates and low death rates in societies with advanced technology, education, and economic development. This transition typically occurs in five stages: Stage 1: High Stationary Characterized by high birth rates and high death rates, which fluctuate due to events like famine, disease, and war. This results in a relatively stable or very slow population growth*. No country is currently in Stage 1. Stage 2: Early Expanding Death rates begin to fall rapidly due to improvements in sanitation, healthcare, and food supply. Birth rates remain high. This leads to a rapid increase in population*. Many of the least developed countries are in this stage. Stage 3: Late Expanding Birth rates start to fall due to factors such as increased access to contraception, urbanization, rising wages, and improved status and education for women. Death rates continue to fall but at a slower pace. Population growth continues but begins to slow down*. Many developing countries are in this stage. Stage 4: Low Stationary Both birth rates and death rates are low, fluctuating slightly. This results in a stable or very slow population growth*. Most developed countries are in this stage. Stage 5: Declining (or sometimes referred to as a potential future stage) Birth rates fall below death rates, leading to a declining population*. This is observed in some highly developed countries, such as Japan and Germany. The model illustrates how populations evolve from high mortality and fertility to low mortality and fertility, often linked to economic development and modernization.
