Why are most buildings in the traditional northern part of Ghana oval in shape

Most traditional buildings in the northern part of Ghana are oval or round primarily for several practical and environmental reasons:

• Structural Stability: With traditional building materials like mud and thatch, a round shape is inherently more stable and resistant to collapse than rectangular structures, as it distributes weight and pressure evenly without weak corners.
• Material Efficiency: Constructing a round wall often requires less material for a given enclosed volume compared to a square or rectangular building, making it more economical with local resources.
• Wind Resistance: The aerodynamic shape offers better resistance to strong winds, including the Harmattan, which can be prevalent in the region.
