Types of human settlement and characteristics

Human settlements can be broadly categorized based on their size, density, and function. Here are some common types and their characteristics:

1. Rural Settlements:

2. Urban Settlements:

4. Informal Settlements (Slums):

   • Characteristics: These are settlements characterized by substandard housing, overcrowding, lack of secure land tenure, and inadequate access to basic services like clean water, sanitation, and electricity. They often arise due to rapid urbanization and a lack of affordable housing.
