Four areas that came together to form the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast was formed from the amalgamation of four distinct areas:

1. The Colony: This comprised the coastal forts and settlements acquired by the British, including Cape Coast Castle and Accra.
2. The Protectorate: This included territories that came under British protection through treaties with local chiefs.
3. Ashanti: This powerful kingdom was conquered by the British in the late 19th century and incorporated into the Gold Coast.
4. The Northern Territories: These areas to the north were also brought under British administration, primarily to prevent other European powers from claiming them and to secure the northern borders of Ashanti.
