MR PRINSLOO (Commissioner): Mr Van Niekerk, would you tell the Committee what happened with regard to the interrogation of Stanza Bopape?

Mr. Van Niekerk, a member of the Security Branch of the South African Police, testified about the interrogation of Stanza Bopape on June 12, 1988, at John Vorster Square.

Bopape initially refused to cooperate. Van Niekerk and his colleagues decided to "give him a fright." They tied him to a wooden chair, removed his shirt, and applied an electric shock device to his body.

During the third round of electric shocks, Bopape's head fell forward, and he showed no signs of life despite attempts at resuscitation. He was already dead. Several other police officers were present.

Van Niekerk claimed their intention was not to kill Bopape but to obtain information, stating that such methods were common practice for uncooperative detainees. The TRC concluded that the officers made a full disclosure of the facts. As a result, their application for amnesty was granted.
