Born Marie Gouze, she adopted the name Olympe de Gouges and became a vocal advocate for social and political reform. Her most famous work, the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen (1791), challenged the patriarchal assumptions of the revolution and demanded equal rights for women, including the right to vote and hold public office. She also campaigned against the slave trade. De Gouges was a critic of Maximilien Robespierre and the Jacobins, and her outspoken views led to her arrest and execution by guillotine in 1793 during the Reign of Terror.
