What are the provisions of Section 50 of the Universities Act of 2021 regarding the functions of the University?

The question asks about the provisions of Section 50 of the Universities Act of 2021. This requires specific knowledge of the said Act, likely pertaining to the University of Sierra Leone, given the exam context.

• A. Student Discipline: While universities have provisions for student discipline, it is usually detailed in specific regulations or other sections, not typically the primary focus of a general "functions" section like Section 50 often is.
• B. Court: A university's "Court" (a governing body) would have its functions defined, but Section 50 is generally broader.
• C. Senate: Similar to the Court, the Senate's functions are defined, but Section 50 is likely to cover the overall university functions.
• D. Teaching, research, serving as an examining body and the provision of professional, community as well as commercial services: This option comprehensively describes the core and expanded functions of a modern university. University Acts commonly dedicate a section to outlining these fundamental roles.

Based on the typical structure and content of university legislation, Section 50 of the Universities Act, 2021 (Sierra Leone) is indeed dedicated to outlining the functions of the University. These functions generally encompass academic activities (teaching, research), quality assurance (examining body), and engagement with society (professional, community, and commercial services).

Therefore, option D accurately reflects the broad scope of functions typically provided for in such a section.

The correct option is D.
