What is weight?

Pressure ($P$) is defined as the force ($F$) applied perpendicular to a surface divided by the area ($A$) over which the force is distributed:

From the formula, pressure is inversely proportional to the area. This means that for a constant force, increasing the area will decrease the pressure, and decreasing the area will increase the pressure.

To reduce pressure, the area of contact needs to be maximized. Broad strips provide a larger surface area compared to narrow strips. Therefore, using broad strips will distribute the force over a larger area, resulting in reduced pressure.
