It often originates from the mouth due to poor oral hygiene, like not brushing or flossing regularly. This allows bacteria to build up, releasing unpleasant chemicals. Other causes include dry mouth, sinus or throat infections, and even certain health conditions like chronic kidney disease or tonsil stones. Strong-smelling foods can also temporarily contribute.
The good news is that halitosis is largely preventable. The most important step is maintaining good oral hygiene: brush your teeth after every meal or twice daily, and use dental floss. A mouth rinse and gargling with salt water can also help. Remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and consider using a tongue scraper. Eating fruits like apples and chewing sugar-free gum can stimulate saliva. If bad breath persists, it's best to consult a dentist.
