Explain why coastal areas have milder temperatures than inland areas.

Land heats up and cools down quickly. During summer, inland areas absorb a lot of solar energy, causing their temperatures to rise significantly, leading to hot summers. In winter, land loses heat rapidly, resulting in very cold temperatures. Water (the sea) heats up and cools down much more slowly than land. This is because sunlight can penetrate water to a greater depth, distributing the heat over a larger volume, and water has a higher specific heat capacity*. In summer, the sea absorbs a lot of heat but warms up slowly, keeping nearby coastal areas cooler. In winter, the sea releases its stored heat slowly, warming the air above it. This warmer air then moderates the temperature of coastal areas, making their winters milder compared to inland regions.
