For the definition of climate change. Let's evaluate each statement:

The question asks for the definition of climate change. Let's evaluate each statement:

• a) The rise in global temperatures due to the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This statement describes global warming, which is a significant aspect of current climate change, but it is not the complete definition of climate change itself. Climate change encompasses broader shifts in climate patterns, not just temperature, and can be caused by natural factors as well.
• b) Any natural or induced change in climate, either globally or in a particular area. This is a broad and accurate definition. Climate change refers to any significant, long-term alteration in the statistical distribution of weather patterns, which can be natural or human-caused, and can affect specific regions or the entire planet.
• c) Long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. This is a concise and accurate definition. It emphasizes the "long-term" aspect and includes both temperature and broader weather patterns.
• d) A long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earth's local, regional and global climates. This is a comprehensive and accurate definition, detailing the nature of the change (long-term, average weather patterns) and its scope (local, regional, and global).

Statements b, c, and d all provide accurate aspects of the definition of climate change. Statement a is too narrow as it specifically describes global warming, which is a manifestation of climate change, but not the overarching definition. Therefore, any option including 'a' would be incorrect as a complete definition of climate change.

The correct combination of alternatives is b, c, and d.

The final answer is $\boxed{\text{b, c and d}}$
