Here are five possible ways to use the Nyabarongo river water resource to address malnutrition in children:

1. Irrigation for diverse crop cultivation: The river water can be channeled to irrigate farmlands, allowing farmers to grow a wider variety of nutrient-rich crops such as legumes (beans, groundnuts), vegetables (spinach, carrots), and fruits. This ensures a consistent food supply, especially during dry seasons, directly providing essential vitamins and proteins.
2. Establishment of fish farms (aquaculture): Utilizing the river water, communities can set up fish ponds or cages for aquaculture. Fish are an excellent source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and various vitamins, directly combating protein-energy malnutrition.
3. Support for livestock farming: Providing reliable access to river water for livestock (cattle, goats, poultry) ensures their health and productivity. Healthy animals produce more milk, meat, and eggs, which are crucial sources of protein and vitamins for children.
4. Community water purification and distribution: Implementing systems to purify river water for safe drinking and domestic use is vital. Access to clean water reduces the incidence of waterborne diseases, which often lead to diarrhea and nutrient malabsorption, exacerbating malnutrition.
5. Development of small-scale vegetable gardens and hydroponics: Communities can establish small, intensively cultivated vegetable gardens or even hydroponic systems near the river, using its water to grow nutrient-dense vegetables and fruits in a controlled and efficient manner, increasing local food availability.
