Define map projects

A map projection is a method of representing the three-dimensional surface of the Earth onto a two-dimensional plane (like a flat map). Because the Earth is a sphere (or more accurately, an oblate spheroid), it's impossible to flatten its surface perfectly without distortion. Map projections try to minimize this distortion, but they always introduce some degree of stretching, compressing, or tearing of shapes, areas, distances, or directions.
