Otto von Bismarck, the German Chancellor, sought to expand Germany's colonial empire for economic benefits and national prestige. At the time, other European powers like Britain and France had not yet fully established formal claims over the region, leaving a window of opportunity. German traders and explorers, particularly Gustav Nachtigal, had already established a presence and signed treaties with local chiefs, such as King Bell of Douala, who sought protection from British influence. These treaties provided a legal pretext for annexation. To consolidate their rule, the Germans employed several methods: • Military force: They established garrisons and used punitive expeditions to suppress revolts and enforce their authority. • Administrative structures: They set up a colonial administration, appointed governors, and introduced German laws and taxation systems. • Economic exploitation: They established plantations for cash crops like rubber and palm oil, forcing local populations into labor and extracting resources. • Infrastructure development: They built roads, railways, and ports to facilitate resource extraction and military movement. • Indirect rule: In some areas, they co-opted local chiefs into their administrative system, using them to collect taxes and enforce German policies. By 1907, the Germans had largely succeeded in suppressing major organized resistance. While localized uprisings and discontent continued, the most significant early resistance movements, such as those led by the Duala and other coastal groups, had been brutally put down. The German military superiority and harsh tactics, including public executions and forced labor, effectively crushed large-scale opposition, allowing them to establish firm control over much of the territory.
