Germany was able to annex Cameroon in 1884 due to several factors. Otto von Bismarck, the German Chancellor, sought to expand Germany's colonial empire for economic benefits and national prestige. At the time, other European powers like Britain and France had not yet fully established formal claims over the region, leaving a window of opportunity. German traders and explorers, particularly Gustav Nachtigal, had already established a presence and signed treaties with local chiefs, such as King Bell of Douala, who sought protection from British influence. These treaties provided a legal pretext for annexation.

To consolidate their rule, the Germans employed several methods:
