Hello everyone. Today, I'll briefly describe Protein Energy Malnutrition, or PEM, and its global prevalence.
Protein Energy Malnutrition is a severe form of malnutrition resulting from inadequate intake of protein and energy-rich foods. It primarily affects children and can manifest in two main forms: marasmus, characterized by severe wasting and stunted growth, and kwashiorkor, which involves edema and a distended abdomen despite some fat reserves.
The primary causes are poverty, food insecurity, poor sanitation, and lack of access to nutritious food and healthcare.
In terms of prevalence, PEM remains a significant global health issue, particularly in low-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Millions of children under five years old are affected, leading to high rates of stunting, wasting, and increased susceptibility to infections. It contributes to nearly half of all deaths in young children worldwide. Addressing PEM is crucial for improving child survival and long-term development.
