A wave is a propagating disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without the transfer of matter.

Waves are classified based on the direction of oscillation (displacement of particles) relative to the direction of wave propagation into two main types:

• Transverse waves: The particles of the medium oscillate perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation (e.g., waves on a string, light waves).

• Longitudinal waves: The particles of the medium oscillate parallel to the direction of wave propagation (e.g., sound waves).

Waves are also classified by the need for a medium:

• Mechanical waves: Require a material medium (e.g., sound, water waves). These can be transverse or longitudinal.

• Electromagnetic waves: Do not require a medium and propagate through vacuum (e.g., light, radio waves). These are transverse.
