Operant conditioning, developed by B. F. Skinner, is a learning process where the strength of a voluntary behavior is modified by its consequences. Behaviors followed by reinforcement (rewards) are more likely to be repeated, while behaviors followed by punishment are less likely to occur again. Skinner identified two types of reinforcement (positive and negative) and two types of punishment (positive and negative) that shape an organism's actions based on their environmental outcomes.
