Nursing management after phototherapy

Discontinuation of Therapy:

• Phototherapy is discontinued when the infant's serum bilirubin level falls below the threshold for treatment, as determined by the healthcare provider.

Monitoring Bilirubin Levels:

• After stopping phototherapy, the infant's bilirubin level is typically rechecked within 12-24 hours to assess for rebound hyperbilirubinemia.
• Continue to observe the infant's skin for any signs of jaundice.

Hydration and Nutrition:

• Continue to ensure adequate fluid intake and monitor for signs of dehydration.
• Maintain regular feeding schedules.

Temperature Monitoring:

• Continue to monitor the infant's body temperature until stable.

Skin Assessment:

• Assess the infant's skin for any residual effects from the lights, such as dryness or rash.

Parental Education:

• Educate parents on signs and symptoms of jaundice to monitor at home.
• Advise parents on when to contact the healthcare provider if jaundice reappears or worsens.
• Explain the importance of continued feeding and hydration.

Documentation:

• Record the discontinuation of phototherapy, the infant's bilirubin levels post-therapy, and any observations or parental education provided.
