Traditionally, full utilisation was seen as key to maximum productivity. However, the Lean manufacturing philosophy places less emphasis on full utilisation because it prioritises the elimination of waste. Full utilisation can lead to waste such as overproduction, excess inventory, and the production of items before they are needed, which ties up capital and can hide inefficiencies. Lean focuses on producing only what is needed, when it is needed, to create value and improve flow, even if it means some resources are not constantly running at full capacity. iii. The terms 'effectiveness' and 'efficiency' are distinct: • Efficiency means doing things right. It focuses on the process and how resources are used to achieve an outcome with minimal waste, time, or effort. • Effectiveness means doing the right things. It focuses on achieving the desired goal or outcome, regardless of the resources used.
