Conversely, efficient processes can lead to higher productivity, especially when resources are effectively utilised to meet demand. ii) Traditionally, full utilisation was seen as a prerequisite for productivity because it was believed that keeping all resources busy would maximize output. However, the 'Lean manufacturing' philosophy shifts this emphasis from simply keeping resources busy to effective utilisation that minimizes waste. Lean focuses on producing only what is needed, when it is needed, to avoid overproduction and excess inventory, which are considered wastes. Therefore, Lean prioritizes flow and value creation over merely maximizing the uptime of individual resources, even if it means some resources are temporarily idle to prevent system-wide waste. iii) Effectiveness refers to doing the right things, meaning achieving the desired goal or outcome.
