1 (a) What is unemployment?
Unemployment occurs when people who are willing and able to work cannot find suitable jobs. It means that individuals who are actively seeking employment are unable to secure paid work.

1 (b) Discuss five effects of unemployment on the youth in Ghana.

1. Increased Poverty and Hardship: Unemployed youth lack a stable income, leading to financial difficulties, inability to meet basic needs like food and shelter, and a general decline in their living standards. This can push families into deeper poverty.
2. Social Vices and Crime: Frustration and idleness due to unemployment can drive some youth into engaging in social vices such as robbery, drug abuse, prostitution, and other criminal activities as a means of survival or to cope with their situation.
3. Brain Drain and Migration: Talented and educated youth, unable to find opportunities in Ghana, may seek better prospects abroad. This leads to brain drain, where the country loses its skilled workforce, hindering national development.
4. Psychological Distress: Prolonged unemployment can lead to feelings of hopelessness, low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety among young people. This can affect their mental health and overall well-being, making it difficult for them to integrate into society.
