a) Describe the folding and faulting on the map

Folding:
The map shows a series of plunging folds.

• There is a prominent syncline in the western part of the map, where the youngest beds (Red Ash seam, Yned Seam) are found in the core. The V-shaped outcrop pattern indicates that this syncline is plunging towards the north.
• To the east of this syncline, there is an anticline, characterized by older beds (Rough Rock, Ringinglow seam) in its core. The U-shaped outcrop pattern suggests this anticline is also plunging towards the north.
• The folds appear to be asymmetrical, with varying dip angles on their limbs, such as $26^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ}$ shown on the map.

Faulting:

• There are at least two major faults visible on the map.
• A significant fault trends roughly east-west, cutting across the central syncline and anticline. This fault clearly offsets the rock layers and the fold structures. For example, the Red Ash seam and Yned Seam are displaced by this fault.
• Another fault is present in the northwestern part of the map, also cutting across the folded beds.
• The faults are post-folding, as they cut through and displace the previously formed folds, indicating that faulting occurred after the folding event.
