What are the benefits and challenges of using students' home languages in teaching?

I argue for the strategic use of home languages in teaching. The strategic integration of home languages in teaching significantly enhances learning outcomes. Firstly, it improves comprehension by allowing students to grasp complex concepts in a language they are most comfortable with, building a strong cognitive foundation before transferring knowledge to the language of instruction. For example, a teacher might explain a difficult mathematical problem in a student's home language to ensure understanding, then re-explain it in the instructional language. Secondly, it fosters cultural identity and self-esteem. Acknowledging and valuing a student's home language validates their background, making them feel more included and confident in the classroom. An example is allowing students to discuss ideas in small groups using their home language before presenting in the instructional language. Thirdly, it facilitates parental involvement. When parents can communicate with teachers and understand school materials in their home language, they are better equipped to support their child's education. For instance, sending home notices or progress reports in multiple languages can bridge communication gaps. However, this approach presents challenges. One limitation is teacher linguistic proficiency; it's often impractical for teachers to be fluent in all home languages present in a diverse classroom. Another challenge is the availability of bilingual resources, as creating or acquiring materials in numerous languages can be costly and time-consuming.
