To construct a line perpendicular to line AB through point P using a compass and ruler:
Step 1: Place the compass point on point P. Open the compass to any convenient radius.
Step 2: Draw arcs that intersect the line AB on both sides of P. Label these intersection points as X and Y.
Step 3: Open the compass to a radius greater than the distance PX (or PY). Place the compass point on X and draw an arc above (or below) the line AB.
Step 4: Without changing the compass radius, place the compass point on Y and draw another arc that intersects the arc drawn in Step 3. Label this intersection point as Q.
Step 5: Use a ruler to draw a straight line connecting point P and point Q. This line PQ is perpendicular to line AB.
The constructed line is thelinesegmentPQ.
